How do you find the right college for you?Assess YourselfUnderstanding what you want to do with your life (your career) and figuring out how much money you want to make in your career will help you find the right college for you and your needs. It’s important to remember that just because you want to earn a lot of money at your job doesn’t mean you will enjoy the career you pick, just as picking a career you will love everyday doesn’t mean that your job is going to pay you an above average salary. You owe it to yourself to do research and discover how much money jobs in the career you are interested in pay. Many people are happy and love their work although their chosen career may not pay as much as others, or even much less in some careers. The USA Department of Labor’s career search tool will help you select the right college for you by matching your personal and professional skills and interests with possible career choices for you.Use the College Search ToolI found a great search tool from our Department of Education’s college section called the College Navigator, to find the right college for you and your needs. You can use this site to search for schools by geographic location, the degrees they offer, the programs/majors, tuition and fees, class settings, size, and much more. The search results for each schools gives you a variety of information:General school informationTuition, fees, and estimated student expensesTypes of financial aid they provideThe net price of going to this schoolThe student enrollment numbersWhere they are accreditedCampus security and safety statisticsHow many students default on their student loans (indicating they are unemployed now)This tool also lets you compare schools against each other. You can save your information and export all of it into a spreadsheet for later review and show your parents your research.Choosing the right college for you involves a combination of many factors such as your:InterestsCareer goalsFinancial situationThe schools cost, size, and locationWhat the school requires for admissionHere is a list of things you should consider when researching schools and picking the right college for you.Check Out Schools from your Home CountryTo help you and your family narrow down your college options, you can also do these things:Check out the school’s website. Lots of colleges offer virtual tours of their campus so you can see the school in detail and get an idea of the environment. You can also get information about their International Student programs and classes they offer, see if they offer financial aid, and learn more about everything the school offers international students and other student populations.A great way to get a feel for the school is to find a way to contact students who are currently attending the college. Look for a contact on their school website for the International Student advisor or the admissions office staff and send them an email and see if they can help you talk with current international students about their experience. If you are in high school, ask your school counselor what information he or she has about schools in the USA that interest you.Go USA!- MikeAll information presented here is from my personal research and my attempts to save you time and money when pursuing your dream of coming to the USA to study.
